Empowering Communities through Legal Aid – South & Central Districts in Unguja, Zanzibar

15th -19th September 2025

Zanzibar Legal Services Centre (ZLSC), with the generous support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), conducted a successful legal aid outreach at South District and Central Districts in Unguja. This initiative formed part of ongoing efforts to ensure access to justice for all, particularly for marginalized and vulnerable groups in rural communities.

The outreach aimed to empower citizens with knowledge of their legal rights and responsibilities, provide free legal consultation, and assist individuals in resolving disputes through peaceful, lawful means.

Through this event, community members benefited from:

  • Legal awareness sessions on land rights, family law, inheritance, and gender-based violence;
  • One-on-one legal aid consultations with ZLSC lawyers and paralegals;
  • Referrals for further legal support where necessary;
  • Distribution of legal education materials in Swahili.

Legal aid is essential in promoting equality before the law, especially for those who cannot afford legal representation. By bringing services directly to communities like Kikungwi, Chwaka, Uzi, Cheju and Jendere,  ZLSC and UNDP are helping to build a more just, informed, and empowered society.

ZLSC remains committed to reaching more communities across Zanzibar, ensuring no one is left behind in the pursuit of justice.oss Zanzibar, ensuring no one is left behind in the pursuit of justice.
