On October 31, 2024, the Zanzibar Legal Services Centre (ZLSC) held a vital discussion with Shehas and religious leaders from across Zanzibar to promote awareness of women’s economic rights. This meeting underscored the critical role that these community leaders can play in fostering a more equitable society by supporting women’s participation and empowerment in areas such as education, employment, and public decision-making.

The dialogue centered on a shared vision that the empowerment of women is not only essential for individual well-being but also strengthens families, communities, and the wider economy. By addressing challenges and misconceptions that hinder women’s participation in economic life, these leaders are well-positioned to champion women’s rights at the grassroots level. They are uniquely placed to influence positive change by advocating for respect, dignity, and support for women within their communities.

Shehas, as respected community leaders, and religious leaders, with their significant influence over cultural and moral values, can help shift perspectives and practices that may have historically limited women’s roles in society. Together, they can encourage and empower women to engage fully in economic activities and contribute actively to both private and public spheres. When women are supported in this way, they are more likely to access educational opportunities, secure dignified employment, and even pursue roles in public office—benefiting not only themselves but also strengthening the fabric of their communities.

This meeting also provided a platform for open dialogue and shared understanding on the importance of women’s rights in an economic context. Participants explored practical strategies for advancing these rights, addressing obstacles, and enhancing community support for women’s economic engagement. The discussions underscored that every woman deserves to be seen, valued, and empowered to contribute to society’s development in meaningful ways.

The ZLSC remains deeply committed to working alongside Shehas, religious leaders, and other community members to promote and safeguard women’s economic rights. This collaboration marks another step toward a Zanzibar where women can thrive and their contributions are celebrated, furthering the vision of a more inclusive and prosperous society for all.
